Vitculture                               Varieties

Vineyard layout is based on vines spaced at 1.5m apart with 2.75m between rows.

After experimenting with various training
systems including Scott Henry and Lyre all
varieties are now grown on the Vertical Shoot Positioning (VSP) training system. We believe that quality is made from very low yielding crops (e.g. 2000 vintage: approx 1 tonne per acre Pinot Noir, 2 t/acre Chardonnay, 1.8 t/acre Pinot Grigio).
After our trials, we’re entirely satisfied that the VSP system facilitates our management of low yielding expressive fruit and so we’ve now dispensed with other systems in the vineyard.

The selection of not only the most appropriate grape variety but also the choice of clones and how these respond to specific climatic site conditions and soils are based on extensive research and ongoing experimentation.

Pinot Noir clones planted are the classic MV6 clone which provides the body of the wine while the rarer Bernard clone 115 and small plantings of 114 provide additional complexity for blending purposes.

The Vineyard is planted to Pinot Noir (3 ha),
Chardonnay (1 ha), Pinot Gris (1 ha), and
Shiraz (0.4) ha.
